"Since the first week of January, I started to use my personalized version of your three option proposal. The concept was a light bulb moment, and I've sent two proposals with two successes both for £3,500. This truly covers the value of work, is double what I'd usually charge as the proposal included elements I used to throw in for free just to get the project!"

What's the difference between a designer making $10,000-$45,000
per year and one making $75,000+/year

What's the difference between a designer making $10,000-$45,000/year and one making $75,000+/year

I struggled to answer this question the first few years I was freelancing. I would look at the quality of another designer's work and know I was more talented than them. I'd ask myself, "How are they able to charge so much more than me?"

I'll admit, I was a little jealous.

Then I'd think, "Well, maybe they have more experience than me?" But often, they'd been freelancing for less time. Still, they were charging more for their design work than I was.

So what is it they knew that I didn't?

More on that in a minute.

First,
Does this describe you?

  •  You are a designer and you're worried you'll scare off clients if you price too high (so instead you underprice)
  •   Sometimes you tell yourself, "I wouldn't pay the price I'd like to charge for the work so why would my client?"
  •  You're charging by the hour instead of charging for value
  •  You'll work with anyone because you'll take whatever work comes your way
  •  You don't have a good grasp on the value you create for your clients
This used to describe me to a T, and it cost me a ton of money in lost revenue.

Without any formal sales training, I simply didn't know that what I was doing was hurting my business.

Like me, you've probably been focused on improving your craft and getting better at design.

But just being good at your craft is not a guarantee of earning what you deserve. And many of the strategies and tactics that help you progress beyond the early phases of freelancing aren't taught in design school.

Back to my question:
What is it those designers earning 2x, 3x, 5x more than me knew that I didn't?

What is it those designers earning 2x, 3x, 5x more than me knew that I didn't?

What was different about them was this:

• They'd learned to stop sabotaging their design business by chronically undercharging for their work

• They'd overcome any guilt around asking the client to pay them what they were worth and understood how to focus on value

• And they knew how to position themselves as an investment to avoid competing with all the freelancers charging pennies for their work on freelancing sites like Upwork, Fiverr, and 99 designs
"How much is NOT knowing costing you?"

"How much is NOT knowing costing you?"

That was the question I asked myself when I realized the path I was on was losing me a ton of money.

What I learned the hard way was that clients don't hand out projects based solely on talent.

Like I said, I knew I was more talented than those other designers, but it didn't matter.

You can be the most skilled designer in the world, but if you don't know what drives clients to buy, how to position yourself or how to present your price to your client, you'll be stuck earning less when you should be raising your prices—like the other guy is doing.

Once I realized this, I did what any good entrepreneur does: I reached in my back pocket, took out my wallet and invested in educating myself.

What I learned allowed me to go from charging $800 for a logo design to $4,000+.
An  invoice from an awesome design client who was happy to pay my rate
Did I need more talent or experience to make that leap? Nope.

What I needed was to overcome the mental barriers and old ways of doing things that were holding me back and keeping me from raising my prices.

Once I was able to raise my prices and still have happy clients, it allowed me to be selective of who I work with and pick only the best projects to work on.

And it allowed me to do better, more satisfying work for great clients without all the B.S. you get from cheapskate clients and other Client From Hell types. (You know what I'm talking about: asking for 329 revisions, getting paid late—or not at all, etc.)
The Different Levels Of Freelancing

The Different Levels Of Freelancing

There's a progression of levels you go through as you learn more about the business of freelancing. A freelancing ladder—so to speak—that you climb. It's hard to see it on your own when you're in it, but there are relatively clear levels to freelancing.

As a designer, you probably just want to focus on doing what you do best (i.e. doing great design work), but knowing where you are on that ladder can help you understand what you need to do to climb to the next level up. Once you reach a comfortable level AND you are being paid what you are worth, that's when your design business becomes really fun.

Let me show you a few key differences in mindset required as you move up the different levels on the freelancing ladder:
How To Climb
The Ladder

How To Climb The Ladder

Notice in the chart above how pricing becomes more and more about being selective of who you work with? Notice how it's also about your pricing model and moving further and further away from selling time and towards selling the value of your work?

If you fall closer to the first column and feel stuck, unable to move past that invisible wall and charge what your skills are worth, I can help you.

The reason you are stuck is simple: What got you to where you are now, won't get you to where you want to go next.
You've been doing things a certain way, but to move forward, you need a new way of doing things.

You need a change in mentality to pull on those growth levers in your business that will finally get your design business off the ground.

And you need to act.

I've helped other freelance designers just like you escape the rut of pricing by the hour and working with low-value clients.

If you're motivated to climb to the next level, there's a way to cut months or even years of time off what it would take you to do it all on your own.

Imagine:

• Firing those soul-crushing Clients From Hell and working only with clients you love
• Having the freedom to choose to work fewer hours while making more instead of being overworked and underpaid
• Spending more time with family and friends and doing the things you really love
• The satisfaction of knowing you never have to worry about getting a "real job" again
• Proving wrong every single person who told you you'd never make it as a designer

What's different about this course?
What's different about this course?
I created this course specifically to help designers like you level up and move up the freelance ladder. When I was investing in educating myself, one thing I noticed was there were no courses and few books on pricing for designers. I would learn new pricing tactics to grow my revenue, only to realize those tactics worked well if you were a developer, copywriter, etc. but not so much for a designer.

That's what's different about Pricing For Designers. It's a course specifically for designers with tactics that work for designers. (A lot of the concepts will work for other disciplines as well, but I draw on my experience as a designer to bring you what really works for designers climbing up the freelance ladder.)

Another difference is the course does not focus on numbers. So if you're thinking, "I'm no good with numbers" don't worry—you don't have to be a math wiz to make this system work for you. Instead, the course focuses on pricing psychology and the idea that HOW you price is just as important as HOW MUCH you price your work for. Pricing For Designers gives you a system for pricing that scales with you as you grow your business.

Students Getting Real Results
Some of the results students have gotten from the material included in the course:
"I thought I knew what it took on the business side but boy was I wrong"
Before Pricing For Designers:

"Having worked in three design studios after 20 years I finally went out on my own. I thought I knew what it took on the business side but boy was I wrong!

I find pricing for my own work is totally different and I get gripped with fear when I start an estimate—"Am I really worth this?"

I include everything in my price and realize that clients want everything for the 'from' price and take 120 days to pay.

After implementing Pricing For Designers techniques:

I have been inspired by your advice and since the first week of January, I started to use my personalized version of your three option proposal. The concept was a light bulb moment and I've sent two proposals with two successes both for £3,500

This truly covers the value of work, is double what I'd usually charge as the proposal included elements I used to throw in for free just to get the project!
Mel Goodwin
Designer - Mighty Snowbear Design
"Recently sent a proposal for a record amount"
"Business is good, thanks to you (and others) I raised my prices.

I charge about 50-100% more than before I took your course so I'm closer to actually making a profit. :)

I'm also in the process to pick a niche to specialize as you suggested to get even further.

My new minimum engagement level is €1500 and my goal is to go as far as €3000 in the next 6 months.

It's liberating to say no to those low-paying clients and I'm thankful for their no too (when they say "we went with someone closer to our budget").

I think one of the most important message from your teaching is: not everyone's supposed to be my client. Before that I thought I had to try to get everyone on board, now I think twice. ;)

I'm still booked until end of February and recently sent a proposal for a record amount since in business at €8000 (that's about $8500).

Your email templates are also very useful, I keep referring to them and reworked my initial communication based on your process."
Jozsef Juhasz
Web Designer - Focus Web Solutions
"I am so glad I purchased your course/materials earlier this year"
After adapting to the Pricing For Designers process:

"My very first client, I didn’t use anything and it was a really bad fit and kind of a nightmare to work with them. The second time around, I used my screening email and the new client responded back and we were able to have a productive discovery call!

I had another client reach out to me, but I had to decline because they just jumped straight to calling me without giving me the chance to even send the email, which was a huge red flag.

I’m glad that never turned into anything either because my friend ended up taking that job and had the absolute worst experience ever! So it saved me from working with a bad match client!

For the Client Welcome Guide, it actually helped ME get more organized in my process, and clearly outline how we would be working together. There were some great points about each others’ responsibilities and what to expect, and so far, the experience of working with her has been a dream!

The process has been working more smoothly than any of my past client experiences before, and it has taken a lot of stress off me. It also helps keep me accountable for my own responsibilities and adding things I never did before (like the Friday weekly recap) to my process. I just love how it is working out so far!

Thank you for sharing your expertise, I am so glad I purchased your course/materials earlier this year. It has proven to be a great investment!"

"I just landed the largest proposal of my independent career"
"Just wanted to let you know that using methods I learned in your course, I just landed the largest proposal of my independent career—an upgraded gold option for $12,750."

While researching pricing examples for brand identity, I just happened upon your course by accident—and I’m so thankful for it.

Before my exposure to Pricing For Designers, I was burnt out and lost, trying to compete with commoditized design and crowdsourcing pricing. Building a solid process helped me to establish trust, improve communication, and do better work overall.

I think it’s easy for freelancers to get stuck in a loop, working with the wrong clients, repeating the same mistakes. This course was an integral step in getting me out of that loop and headed in the right direction.

The opportunity to work closely with someone, and get an outside perspective on your process seems really valuable in the freelance world."

"I recently closed on a 5- figure contract "
"Though I’ve been in the industry for a while, one of my biggest mental obstacles to overcome has been being confident to charge what my skills are worth.

Ian's insight has opened my eyes to see that the situations, conversations etc. that I navigate are not unusual. Ian's tools and practical strategies have increased my confidence to know what to ask for and how to ask.

I recently closed on a 5-figure contract - my third one with this particular company in a year!"

Bonus #1: Work With Clients You Love Course
My new course that takes you through the entire client intake process: from the Initial Contact until the Project Kickoff meeting

"Other advice I've found gives you a vague idea to go on. What I loved about Work With Clients You Love is that it gives very clear advice with concrete, practical ways to apply it. I particularly love the email scripts (which I have loaded up as canned responses in Gmail) and use them often to save time."

Tola Alade
Designer - Swiftly Studios
The course is broken up into four easily applicable modules:
 Module 1. Qualifying Phase

The course will help you understand what happens when you decide to make prospects qualify to work with you. If you're tired of working with clients who don't respect you or your process, you need to implement a repeatable process for making sure you are working with only the right clients.
 Module 2. Discovery Phase

Ever notice how clients always come to you thinking they know what they want? Except, then, during the project, suddenly they don't? Well, with proper discovery, you come to an agreement before you ever get into doing any of the work. And you make sure that what the client thinks they need is the thing that is really going to help them.
 Module 3. Pricing Phase

How do you get paid what you're worth without scaring off your prospects? And wouldn't it be nice to be able to get paid 100% in advance before starting any of the work? Both of these things are simple and easy to do. In Work With Clients You Love, I'll walk you step-by-step through the process.
 Module 4. Reassurance Phase

Every Client From Hell situation can be avoided with enough planning in advance. By using my Client Welcome Guide template as a starting point, you can reassure your new client at the time they are most likely to sink into buyer's remorse and set their expectations in a professional way that earns you their trust and helps create a solid working relationship.

When you sign up, you will have direct access to me.
For 6 months after purchase, you can email me with any questions you have.

More importantly, you can get feedback on any proposal—BEFORE your prospect sees it.
Besides you, who looks at your proposals before you send them to your prospect? Probably no one, right?

The problem with that is when we price in a vacuum we almost always undercharge

None of us are good at selling ourselves. We are too humble or too shy—whatever the reason—it's almost always true that if someone helps you price your work, you'll get a better price.

Professional firms call this a "Value Counsel". The sole job of the value counsel is to get the best price. They look at the work objectively and don't have all the worries and thoughts in their head like a business owner does.

Thoughts like:

"I don't know if they'll pay the price I'm asking for."

"Is the customer going to think I'm ripping them off?"

Those thoughts cloud your judgement about what the work is worth and that leads to undercharging.

Imagine instead of sweating through the proposal writing process all alone and feeling like you have no idea what you are doing, you can bring in a set of expert eyes to spot any holes where you are leaking revenue from your proposals. I'll give you clear direction BEFORE submitting your proposal to your prospect to help maximize your chances of winning the work.

I'll personally help and coach you.

Imagine the load off your shoulders of not having to get it right all on your own.

Is Pricing For Designers Right For You?
Do you fit this description?

Designer, itching to move up the ladder

If yes, then I think you are going to love it! (In fact, I'll guarantee that you'll love it or I'll give you a full refund. More on that in a moment.)

If you are a designer (brand identity, logo design, web designer, motion designer, etc.) PFD can work for you. It can work for other types of freelancers (e.g., copywriter, social media consultant, editors, etc.) but most of the examples draw from my experience in the design field and, as a designer, you'll be able to really relate to the stories I tell.

The pricing tactics and strategies in the course were learned over the last 7 years of experience, trial and error and personal education and professional development as a freelance designer. The material included in the program has worked for my business as a graphic designer, logo designer, and packaging designer.

If that sounds like you and you are currently earning between $500-$3,500/month but feel like you've hit a wall, Pricing For Designers will help level up your freelance business and make you feel confident about what you offer your clients.
This course will take you from a Level 1 Freelancer to the next level up.

The course is also for you if you fit this description:

You've been freelancing for many years but your business never took off

Some of my students have freelanced on the side, or on and off between jobs for years, or even worked in agencies before striking out on their own. For whatever reason, they weren't able to get much traction and make it to the next level.

Students like these have also seen success using the Pricing For Designers techniques even though they've got 5+ years of freelancing under their belt. Remember, experience and talent alone are not enough.
Who Pricing For Designers is NOT right for
• If you are just starting out

If you've just started freelancing, this program will give you valuable insights for down the road but your main focus at this time should be on getting your first clients. You can use these trade secrets later in your business, but you won't be able to implement as much of them until you have a proposal to write for a paying client.

• If you are earning more than $100,000/year

If you have been freelancing for some time AND you are earning more than $100,000/year from your freelance business, you probably already implement most of the content that's in the course. For example, if you already think of or call yourself an independent consultant rather than a freelancer, this course probably isn't for you.

FAQ's
“What if the program is not right for me?”

There is literally zero risk to you. You'll get my No Guilt Money-Back Guarantee: A 30-day, guaranteed refund if you are not satisfied the program.

“Will the material work for Upwork?”

It could, but overall, I'm not a fan of Upwork, because the caliber of client is lower than you would find off Upwork (even if they do pay you well). There are also limitations to how you can set terms on Upwork and terms are a huge part of pricing for me. (Plus there is the Upwork fee.)

“What if my freelancing business is super sporadic and has been on-and-off for years without any structure, is the program still a fit for me?”

Yes, it could still work for you, I show you how to structure your proposals. But I would want some way to measure your success, and currently, the only measure would be 1. are you landing more clients compared to before? And 2. are the ones you are getting, paying you higher fees? A third, would be are you working with only great clients? But that one (surprisingly) is usually a by-product of charging more.

“What if I have little awareness of cash flow, but really want to stabilize and structure my freelance business so it moves forward, is the program still a fit for me, or do I need a money-managing course instead?

This program is focused on MAKING more while a money management course focuses on SAVING more. You need both in your business, but my bias is towards making more first because there is a limit to how much you can save, but no limit to how much you can earn.

“Can you help with creating contracts?”

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a lawyer, so I can't put your contracts together for you. I have included the design contract I use in my business for you to adapt and make your own (along with a few other resources, but you should always consult with personalized professional advice from an attorney to be safe.

"Is the course mainly video based or is there a PDF format. I feel like I get more from reading than a video based tutorial."

The course has PDF transcripts of all the lessons. So if you prefer to read instead of watch video, you can do that. You can also download all the videos or PDF's and take them on the go with you. To the gym, in your car, wherever and however you like to learn you've always got access to the material.

“What if I hate dealing with numbers?”

The course does not focus on numbers so you don't have to worry. The system is based on the idea that HOW you price is equally or even MORE important than how much you price your work for. So you don't have to be a math wiz to make this system work for you. Once you gain confidence in your ability to see the value in your work and convey that to your client, you'll ask for higher rates and be able to get them. At that level, it's about having the confidence to ask for it—math has little to do with it.

My No-Guilt Guarantee: Try Pricing For Designers for 30 days. If you are not satisfied, I'll happily return your money.

Try the Pricing For Designers program and if you're not satisfied I'll give you 100% of your money back.

I don't want you to pay for something you feel wasn't worth it. If you don't feel you've gotten anything out of the material, I'll refund you 100%.

I've been there before. I've purchased a course and quickly realized the content wasn't for me. Or, it was too basic for the level I was at.

Students asking for refunds are rare—but it does happen. I've tried to be really specific about who the program is for and who it's not for but occsionally someone buys who isn't a good fit.

I want you to know this course was created for you. So if it doesn't meet your expectations—that's on me.

This guarantee is extended for a full 30 days, which should give enough time to go through everything in the program. Try the ENTIRE course. If you are not satisfied, just email me and I'll refund 100% of your money. No hard feelings or guilt trips. Seriously.

"Just started the course - that first email was awesome. So many excellent points about pricing."
"Thanks so much for the informative emails, I always feel like I learn something every time I hear from you."
Have you ever asked yourself any of the questions below?

“How can I charge higher rates for my freelancing business?”

“How can I get clients to treat me like a trusted partner, instead of just a hired hand?”

“How can I land more, better-paying clients ?”

It seems strange, but the answer to all of these questions are actually weirdly related to pricing.
It turns out that pricing is at the heart of solving a lot of the issues you face as a freelancer.

Now obviously, increasing your rates is going to help solve a lot of your problems. But some of the other stuff related to how raising your rates gets you better clients, is not quite so intuitive.
